Porta potty rental in winter in Ohio works the same as summer, with a few changes. From November through March, units get antifreeze or brine so the waste tank does not freeze. Columbus averages a January low of about 22°F, so keep a clear, shoveled path for the service truck.

How cold does it get in Columbus in winter?

Columbus averages a January low of about 22°F, based on National Weather Service climate normals. Nights below freezing are common from late November into March, and cold snaps can push temperatures into the single digits. That is cold enough to freeze an untreated porta potty tank in one night.

You can look up daily normals and records for Columbus in the National Weather Service climate data for the Wilmington, Ohio office. That office covers the Columbus area. Snow, sleet and freezing rain all affect placement and service.

How do porta potties keep from freezing in winter?

Porta potties keep from freezing with antifreeze or a salt brine added to the waste tank. In central Ohio, units get this treatment in freezing weather from November through March. The mix lowers the freezing point of the liquid in the tank, so the unit stays usable on nights well below 32°F.

The treatment is added at delivery and topped off at each service visit. You do not need to add anything yourself. Do not pour hot water or household chemicals into the tank.

The door, seat and vent work the same in winter as in summer. The unit is not heated, so the seat will be cold on a January morning. Crews often keep the unit near the warming trailer or work truck so the walk is short.

Hand sanitizer still works in the cold, though it can feel thick. Handwashing stations with water are harder in deep cold, so ask about them for a winter job before you book.

What do I need to do about snow?

Snow must be cleared to the unit so the service truck can reach it. Keep a shoveled path at least as wide as a person from the truck parking spot to the door, about 15 feet or less. Clear snow away from the door so it opens fully, and salt the step area for safety.

If the truck cannot reach the unit, the weekly service visit may be missed. A unit buried in a snowbank also gets hard for your crew or family to use. After a plow comes through, check that it did not bury the unit.

Tell your plow driver where the unit sits. A small flag on a tall stake helps the plow driver and the service tech find it after a big snow. Keep plowed snow piles off to the side, not in front of the door.

  • Shovel a path from the drive or lane to the unit door.
  • Keep the truck parking spot plowed.
  • Knock snow off the roof after a heavy storm if it is safe to reach.
  • Salt or sand the ground in front of the door.

Where should a porta potty go when the ground is frozen?

Place a winter porta potty on a hard, level surface like a driveway, gravel pad or paved lot, within about 15 feet of the truck. Frozen ground feels solid, but it turns to mud during a thaw, and the unit can lean or sink. A spot near a building also blocks wind, which can tip a unit on icy ground.

Avoid low spots where snowmelt pools and refreezes into ice. Ice under the unit makes it shift. Ice in front of the door is a slip hazard.

Facing the door away from the wind keeps snow from drifting against it. Our standard porta potty page lists the basic size so you can plan the spot.

Are heaters and lights included in winter rentals?

Heaters and lights are not standard on porta potty rentals, so ask before you book if you need either one. A standard unit comes with 3 supplies (toilet paper, hand sanitizer and deodorizer), plus antifreeze in cold months. Never put a fuel-burning heater inside a unit, because of fire and carbon monoxide risk.

Short daylight in December means crews often start and end in the dark. Place the unit near a site light or a lit area of the property. A battery tap light can help guests at an evening event.

For an evening event, a string of outdoor lights along the path also helps guests find the unit safely. For a winter wedding or event with older guests, a restroom trailer may be more comfortable. Trailers need level ground, a water source and a standard outlet, so ask how winter affects the water line.

What about winter construction jobs?

Winter construction jobs still need toilets under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, with the same crew ratios as summer: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. Long rentals bill per 28-day cycle with weekly service included. In winter, each service visit also tops off the antifreeze in the tank.

Snow does not pause the OSHA sanitation standard. If your site shuts down for a week of bad weather, call us so we can adjust service. If you need more visits during a busy stretch, 2x or 3x weekly service can be added.

Quick answers

Do porta potties freeze in Ohio winters?

An untreated porta potty tank can freeze on a cold Ohio night. To prevent that, units get antifreeze or salt brine in freezing weather from November through March. The treatment is added at delivery and topped off at each weekly service visit. You do not need to add anything yourself during the rental.

What happens if snow blocks the service truck?

A blocked path can cause a missed service visit, since the truck needs to reach within about 15 feet of the unit. Clear the driveway or lane and shovel a path to the door after each storm. Call us once the path is open, and we will get the unit serviced.

Can I get a porta potty delivered in a snowstorm?

Delivery during a snowstorm depends on road conditions and site access. Trucks run Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and may shift routes when roads are bad. Call to confirm your slot on a stormy day. A plowed driveway or lot makes delivery much more likely.

Is a winter porta potty rental priced differently?

Winter rentals follow the same billing setup as other months: a flat rate for events and 28-day cycles for long rentals. Antifreeze treatment is part of cold-weather service. Your quote lists anything extra, such as added service visits. See the pricing guide for the five things that set your price.
