How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A Columbus construction site needs 1 porta potty for up to 20 workers under OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51. From 21 to 199 workers, plan 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Handwashing is also required. Most home builds and remodels need 1 standard unit, serviced weekly.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | 8 framers: 1 unit |
| 21 to 199 | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 60 workers: 2 units with urinals |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | 250 workers: 5 units with urinals |
Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) and (f). Ohio private employers follow federal OSHA. This is the legal minimum; your general contractor or site plan may require more.

How often is a job site porta potty serviced?
A job site porta potty is serviced once a week, and that visit is included in the 28-day price. Each visit pumps the waste tank, cleans and disinfects the walls, seat and urinal, and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Crews of more than 10 per unit should add a second weekly visit.
| Workers per unit | Suggested service |
|---|---|
| 1–10 | Weekly (included) |
| 11–20 | Twice a week |
| 20+ | Add a unit, or three visits a week |
Service suggestions are our recommendation, not an OSHA rule.
How does billing work for a construction porta potty?
Construction porta potties bill every 28 days and renew until you call for pickup. The first invoice covers the first 28 days, delivery and four weekly services. Later cycles cost the same or less, because delivery is already done. Contractors with several sites can get one monthly invoice.
Moving phases? We can move a unit across the same lot at no charge or to a new site for a short trip fee. See the pricing guide for starting rates.
Where should a porta potty go on a job site?
Place a job site porta potty on flat, firm ground within about 15 feet of where a service truck can park. Keep it away from trenches, crane swing areas, dumpster drop zones and the path of concrete trucks. On a residential lot, the corner of the driveway apron is usually the safest spot.
- Keep the door facing away from the street for privacy.
- Stake or strap units on open, windy lots.
- In winter, keep a shoveled path so the truck can reach the unit.
Read the placement checklist and the OSHA construction toilet guide.
Which units work best on Columbus job sites?
Most Columbus job sites run on standard porta potties with a urinal, plus one handwashing station per site. Large commercial projects add more stations and sometimes a restroom trailer for office staff. Wheelchair-accessible units help on public-facing projects and long jobs with visitors.
| Unit | Best for | Handwashing | Water / power needed | Space |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | Job sites, backyard parties, most events | Hand sanitizer inside | None | About 44 in wide; fits a 4-ft gate |
| Deluxe flushing unit | Weddings, showers, guests who expect a sink | Foot-pump sink, soap, towels | None | A little larger; arrives with fresh water |
| Wheelchair-accessible unit | Public events, guests who use a wheelchair or walker | Sanitizer; add a station | None | About 7.5 ft square; needs a wide, flat spot |
| Restroom trailer | Weddings, VIP areas, long formal events | Real sinks, mirrors, lights | Hose within 75 ft and a 110V outlet | Needs level ground and truck access |
| Handwashing station | Food service, crews, kids, any event over 50 people | Two sinks, soap, towels | None | Stands next to the toilets |
Construction rental questions
Can you deliver a job site porta potty before the crew arrives?
Deliveries start on the first route each morning, so a unit ordered the day before is usually on site before a 7:30 a.m. crew start. Same-day delivery is also available when you call by noon, Monday through Saturday.
Do you set up accounts for contractors?
Contractors can open an account with one card on file and get one invoice for every site. Add or remove units by text. Each unit is listed by job address, so billing matches your project costs.
Can I get a porta potty for a home remodel I am doing myself?
Homeowners rent the same job site units as contractors. A bathroom or kitchen remodel usually needs one standard unit on the driveway for 3 to 6 weeks, billed on a 28-day cycle with weekly service included.
Do you remove the tax for state or tax-exempt projects?
Tax-exempt projects can send an exemption certificate before the first invoice, and tax is removed from every cycle. Public agencies can also get invoices with purchase order numbers on them.
What happens to the porta potty in freezing weather?
From November through March, units get antifreeze or brine so the tank does not freeze. Keep a clear, shoveled path to the door so the service truck can reach it after snow.
