What does OSHA require for farm field workers?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 field workers when 11 or more employees do hand labor in the field on the same day. The toilet and station must be within a quarter-mile walk of each worker, or brought in if transport takes longer.

Can a porta potty move with the crew across a field?

A porta potty can be placed at a field edge and moved as harvest moves, so it stays within the quarter-mile walk OSHA requires. Trailer-mounted units can be towed between fields by a farm truck. Standard units are moved by our driver during the weekly service visit.

Which farms rent porta potties?

Central Ohio farms rent porta potties for vegetable and fruit harvest crews, nurseries, U-pick and pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hay crews, farm weddings, and county fair campsites. Public-facing farms should add a wheelchair-accessible unit and a handwashing station near the food area.

Farm rental questions

Do small family farms need to follow the OSHA field rule?

OSHA's field sanitation rule applies when 11 or more employees do hand labor in the field on the same day. Smaller crews are not covered by that rule, but a unit and a handwashing station still keep workers on site and food safe.

Can you deliver to a field with no address?

Send a GPS pin or map screenshot by text, plus the field gate and any landmark. Drivers deliver to field edges, barn lots and farm lanes all the time. Firm, dry ground is best in wet spring months.

How long can a farm rent a porta potty?

Farms rent by the 28-day cycle for a harvest or for the whole season, with weekly service included. Pumpkin patches and fall festivals often rent from September through early November.

Do I need handwashing as well as a toilet?

OSHA's field rule requires a handwashing facility with the toilet, one for every 20 workers. A two-sided handwashing station meets that need and comes with fresh water, soap and paper towels.
