Renting a porta potty for a backyard party keeps guests out of your house and takes the load off your septic system. A common industry guideline is 1 standard unit per 50 guests for up to 4 hours, plus 1 unit if alcohol is served. One unit is normal for a small party.
Why rent a porta potty for a backyard party?
Hosts rent a porta potty for 3 main reasons: to protect a septic system, because the house has no first-floor bathroom, or to keep guests out of the house. One rented unit can handle a party of up to 50 guests for about 4 hours, so your indoor bathroom stays clean and private.
- Septic protection: Dozens of extra flushes in one afternoon can overload a septic tank and drain field. Many rural central Ohio homes are on septic.
- No first-floor bathroom: Guests walking upstairs or through bedrooms is awkward, and muddy shoes ruin carpet.
- Keeping guests outside: Fewer people in the house means less cleaning, less worry about pets, and more privacy.
A rented unit also cuts the line at your one indoor bathroom. Guests do not have to wait, and you do not have to keep restocking toilet paper.
How many porta potties do I need for my party?
A common industry guideline is 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event of up to 4 hours. Add 1 more unit if alcohol is served, because guests use the restroom more often. A party of 40 guests with no alcohol needs 1 unit, and a party of 80 with beer needs 3.
| Guests (up to 4 hours) | Base units | With alcohol (add 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 | 1 | 2 |
| 51 to 100 | 2 | 3 |
| 101 to 150 | 3 | 4 |
| 151 to 200 | 4 | 5 |
Here is how to use the table. Find your guest count, read the base number, then add 1 unit if you are serving beer, wine or cocktails. For parties longer than 4 hours, use the porta potty calculator and sizing guide to adjust.
Is one porta potty enough?
One unit is normal for a small backyard party of 50 guests or fewer without much alcohol. Many hosts also keep the indoor bathroom open for older guests or small children. That combination works well for most family parties.
Which backyard parties usually need a porta potty?
Graduation open houses, milestone birthdays, July 4 cookouts and family reunions are the 4 backyard parties that most often need a porta potty. Each one tends to draw 30 to 150 guests who stay for hours. Open houses also bring a steady stream of people in and out all afternoon.
| Party | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Graduation open house | Guests come and go over 3 to 4 hours; May and June weekends book up |
| Milestone birthday | Often evening with alcohol; add 1 unit and consider a light |
| July 4 cookout | Long day with food and drinks; book 1 to 3 weeks ahead |
| Family reunion | Mixed ages; consider a wheelchair-accessible unit |
For Sunday parties, the unit arrives Saturday and is picked up Monday at no extra rental charge. See event porta potty rental in Columbus for more on graduations and holiday parties.
What extras should I add for a party?
The 3 most useful extras for a backyard party are a handwashing station, a lock, and a light. A 2-sided handwashing station lets 2 guests wash at once, which matters when food is served. A light helps after sunset, and each unit already comes stocked with toilet paper, hand sanitizer and deodorizer.
- Handwashing station: A 2-sided handwashing station gives guests real water near the food.
- Lock: Ask about a lock if the unit will sit out before or after the party, so neighbors or passersby do not use it.
- Light: Lights are not standard. A battery tap light or string lights nearby help guests at an evening party.
- Nicer unit: A deluxe flushing unit with a sink suits a dressier party.
Where should the porta potty go in my yard?
Put the porta potty on flat, firm ground where the truck can park within about 15 feet. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide and fits through a 4-foot gate. Place it a short walk from the food, downwind if possible, and keep it off your septic lid and drain field.
Face the door away from the tables and the house. A spot beside the garage or a fence gives privacy and blocks wind. Mark the spot with a flag or stake before delivery.
You do not need to be home when the unit arrives. Leave any gate code in your booking notes.
How much does a party porta potty cost?
Party porta potty cost depends on 5 things: your location, the unit type, your dates, any added servicing, and how many units you rent. Event rentals are priced as a flat rate for the event, not by the hour. Delivery the day before and pickup the next business day are part of the rental.
A standard unit costs less than a deluxe unit, and a handwashing station is an add-on. Same-day delivery may carry a fee that is quoted before you book. See the porta potty pricing guide for what a quote includes.
