How many porta potties do you need for an event?
Plan one standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event up to 4 hours. For 5 to 8 hours, plan one per 40 guests. Past 8 hours, plan one per 30 guests. These are the common industry planning numbers; the table below turns them into whole units.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 5 to 8 hours | Over 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 guests | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 50 guests | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 guests | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 guests | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 guests | 4 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 guests | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 400 guests | 8 | 10 | 14 |
| 500 guests | 10 | 13 | 17 |
Table values round up. Add units for alcohol, food and accessibility as shown in the next sections.
Event restroom calculator
Method: 1 unit per 50 guests up to 4 hours, 1 per 40 for 5–8 hours, 1 per 30 past 8 hours. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served. Details in the sizing guide.
How many extra porta potties do you need when alcohol is served?
Add 1 porta potty for every 4 units when alcohol is served, rounding up. If the table says 4 units for your event, add 1 to make 5. If it says 9, add 3 to make 12. Guests drink more water and beer than at a dry event, so lines grow fast after the first hour.
Worked example: a 150-guest wedding with a bar
- 150 guests for 5 hours uses the 5-to-8-hour column: 150 ÷ 40 = 3.75, so 4 units.
- Alcohol is served: 4 ÷ 4 = 1, so add 1 unit. Total: 5 units.
- Accessibility: 5% of 5 is 0.25, so at least 1 of the 5 is wheelchair-accessible.
- Food is served: 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25, so 2 handwashing stations.
How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties are required?
The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, require at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, with a minimum of 1. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 30 needs 2. An accessible unit needs a 60-inch diameter turning space inside.
This is the legal minimum. For events with older guests or a public crowd, one accessible unit per cluster even when small is a kind choice. Confirm the rule for your event with your venue or permit office. Source: U.S. Access Board, 2010 ADA Standards §213. See wheelchair-accessible porta potty rental.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. From 21 to 199 workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. At 200 or more workers, it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. Handwashing is required under 1926.51(f).
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | 8 framers: 1 unit |
| 21 to 199 | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 60 workers: 2 units with urinals |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | 250 workers: 5 units with urinals |
A standard unit with a urinal counts as one seat and one urinal. Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Weekly service is the baseline; crews over 10 per unit do better with two visits a week. More on construction porta potty rental.
How many handwashing stations do you need?
Plan 1 handwashing station for every 4 porta potties at events with food, with at least 1 station. A two-sided station lets two people wash at once. Farms with field crews need 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers under OSHA 1928.110. Construction sites must provide handwashing under OSHA 1926.51(f).
See handwashing station rental or compare a station with a deluxe unit that has a sink.
Can one porta potty handle a small backyard party?
One standard porta potty handles a backyard party of up to about 50 guests for 4 hours. That covers most graduation, birthday and July 4 parties. Add a second unit at 50 to 100 guests, or when alcohol is served to more than 40 guests. Separate units for men and women also shorten lines.
The party and event rental page covers placement and timing.
Porta potty sizing questions
How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?
For 100 guests at an event up to 4 hours, plan 2 standard porta potties. For 5 to 8 hours, plan 3. Add 1 more if alcohol is served. Make sure at least 1 unit is wheelchair-accessible if the event is public.
How many porta potties do I need for 200 people?
For 200 people at a 4-hour event, plan 4 standard units. For 5 to 8 hours, plan 5. With alcohol, add 1 to 2 more. A group this size with food also needs 1 or 2 handwashing stations.
Do I need separate men's and women's units?
Separate units are not required, but they help at events over 50 guests. Units for men come with a urinal, which moves lines faster. Women's units without urinals stay cleaner. A sign on each door is enough.
Does a restroom trailer replace several porta potties?
A 2-stall restroom trailer serves roughly the same number of guests as 2 to 3 standard units at a 5-hour event, because each stall turns over quickly. Trailers need water and power, so they suit venues with a hose bib and outlet nearby.
How many porta potties does a 10-person crew need?
A 10-person crew needs 1 porta potty under OSHA rules, since one toilet covers up to 20 workers. Ten people using one unit all week fill the tank fast, so many contractors add a second weekly service visit.
